Alice in Wonderland revisited

Back in May I featured Marjorie Torrey’s illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The post received lots of interest and the book sold very quickly. Another copy came into stock (hence this update) but has now sold. I will keep looking for other copies and post about any I find. Thank you for your interest.

UPDATE March 2013 I've just discovered the Alice in Wonderland story illustrated by Marjorie Torrey is included in The Winner Treasury published by Adprint in 1955. If you can't find the original edition this one would be a very good compromise.

UPDATE September 2013 The Winner Treasury is now sold, thank you for your interest.

I think these are some of the nicest Alice illustrations I’ve seen - what do you think?

  1. I have a copy of this book packed away in a box somewhere (unfortunately I've had to put a lot of things into storage lately). Your post makes me want to get it out and look at it again. I LOVE this version of the story. For me this was the quintessential Alice and nothing else came close (not even the facsimile of the original manuscript that I was given afterwards!)

If I remember correctly there was a picture of Alice and her big sister on the inside back cover (I think her sister has her hair in a net and was holding a big floppy hat.) Am I right in thinking this or am I making up memories?

  2. These are wonderful drawings. I've always loved this story. It is the title 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. As a child, the idea of this kind of adventure thrilled me.

I know what you mean Donna; I used to love these kind of stores (still do really) and Alice’s adventures in Wonderland is one of my favourites.

You are right other than the picture you describe is on the inside of the front cover. Her sister does have her hair in a net, the hat is on the grass by her side, and she is holding a book. Alice is sitting looking at the white rabbit. The picture inside the back cover is of Alice with the pack of cards.

It's such a pretty book it would be worth getting out of that box and keeping it somewhere where you could look at it now and again.

  5. Thanks for leaving the reply Barbara - I can just 'see' the picture in my mind now that you have described it. It made a big impression on me when I was a child.

I'm sure whoever buys this copy of the book will really love it!

Happy to help. It's amazing how pictures leave such lasting impressions - often much more than words.
