Does anyone still use these? I can remember my mum knitting school jumpers for my brother, sister and I using a 'ro-tally' to count the rows. But I had no idea what it was called until I found this card in
Barbara, I've never knitted a whole sweater in my life, only a row or two when my cousin taught me back in the 80s, so I haven't seen this before. What surprises we find in books!

ReplyDeleteMy grandmother used to knit me school cardigans (made with a world of love) when I was in primary school. I'm sure there was nothing wrong with them but all I wanted was the (thin) shop bought kind the other children wore!
I haven't knitted anything myself for about 20 years - I quite used to enjoy it but I was never completely happy with the results and usually became tired of the garment before I had finished it!
You know, I used to have some of these, but I threw them out because I just never used them. Fun to see them again.

ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you feel, I would have given anything for a shop bought cardigan! When my little granddaughter was born last year I had a sudden longing to knit something for her and went to look at patterns. Whatever happened to knit one purl one? Everything looked so complicated I gave up before I even got started.
ReplyDeleteI have knitted in my time but not for years and years. I have a friend who always has a cardigan or jumper on the go and some of them are really lovely.
ReplyDeleteIt’s amazing how something so inconsequential can bring back so many memories. Mum was always knitting and checking her row numbers with a little gadget (the ro-tally!) but I had completely forgotten about it until I came across this card.

ReplyDeleteI would hang on to that bubble gum wrapper there are a lot of bubble gum wrapper enthusiasts in the world, believe it or not! If you Google ‘bubble gum comics and wrappers’ you will see what I mean. Just think how many would have been thrown away – yours could even be valuable!
