The Antiques Road Trip Arrives at Cottees Auction House

Yesterday was just a normal day. Up early and off to an auction, but as soon as we arrived at Cottees Auction House and Saleroom in Wareham, Dorset, we realised something was afoot. The packed car park should have given us a hint, but it took the sight of several young men hefting large cameras for the penny to drop. The Antiques Road trip was about to roll into town!
For anyone who’s not seen the show, the idea is quite simple. Two competing antique experts set off on a road trip around the UK searching for treasures to sell at auction.  Each week-long episode features different experts, yesterday was the turn of Philip Serrell and Tom Scott.
Turning up in an open-top car is a nice touch, unless, as was the case yesterday, it's pouring with rain. The two presenters looked as if they were in need of a warming cup of tea, but first there was the business of putting the roof on the car...
not once, but three times!

Philip Serrell and Tom Scott staying dry between takes.
Filming continued throughout the early part of the auction, and I rather wish I’d paid attention as I don’t know who won. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before the programme airs.
I was lucky enough to be the high bidder on all the lots I wanted so a very satisfactory day. I don’t suppose the losing presenter will feel quite the same way.

Update January 2014; this show aired on BBC Two today and is available to view here until the 17th January 2014.  If you look very closely you can see Terry and I at the back of the auction room!

  1. Oh my gosh, Barbara - Antiques Road Trip is one of my favourite shows! You're so lucky to have been at one of the auctions! Who are your favourite experts? Mine are Charles Hanson and Charlie Ross - they never fail to put a smile on my face.

    1. Hi Sophie, you just picked my two favourites. Charles Hanson is bumbling but adorable & the other Charles makes me laugh. Tom Scott is new, but he may well become another of my favourites before too long! It really pays to keep a camera or phone handy at all times! The auction was a lot of fun.

  7. Barbara, I've missed so many posts! I will catch up on them soon. So glad you're high bidder on all the lots you want. Also, I got your message on 'The Music of Dolphins' and am thrilled you love it. You make me want to read it again! {I recently discovered the author's website, and she said 'Shay' was actually raised by humans but was so neglected that she didn't behave like a normal child at all. How sad! But how real, too.}

    1. Hello Claudine, you should read it again…I’m going to! Thanks so much for telling me about it, it’s my new favourite book. I must look at the website; I would love to read more of the background. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on this post and the previous one, I really appreciate it. Now it's time to call into your lovely blog and see what new delights are on offer!

  9. How fun that you got to watch the "behind the scenes" of the making of a tv show. I think we get that one on the BBC America channel. It's been a while since I've seen it, though. Looks like you had a really good book buying day!!

    1. It certainly will. I can't wait to find out who won. I just hope I’m not in any of the images they show on TV - my sister has seen me on Bargain Hunt a couple of times (in the background – not on the show!) but I’ve yet to catch a glimpse of myself. Thank goodness! Thanks for calling in Stephanie it's always a pleasure to have a visit from you.

    1. Hi Brandy, it certainly added a little excitement to the room. It doesn't make it easy to view the lots when cameras are around but the general 'buzz' more than makes up for it. I must come over and see you in the next couple of days. It's been a while since I last visited.

    1. Hi Donna, it was a lot of fun! You often see people at auctions reading newspapers or books (trying to while away the hours between ‘their’ lots) but not so at this sale - everyone was far too interested in what was going on!
