A beautiful picture
book telling the story of three small children, a dog and a cat about to go on
holiday..
Travelling by steam train…
and taxi!
On arrival at their destination, they chat to a flower
seller...
and a hurdy-gurdy boy.
They spend a long time gazing at the toys in the toyshop window
before going to play in the park.
Then it's off to the cake shop for tea with grandpapa.
I know some people might think the animals have no business
being in the cake shop never mind sitting at the table, but it’s my favourite
picture. Grandpapa looks like a kindly old gentleman. The children are
incredibly wholesome and the animals well behaved. Even the waitress is
smiling.
Hello Barbara, what a lovely book. I agree with you on the little cat & dog in the tea shop....so sweet. I think perhaps my favourite picture is the last one. I love all the little things peeking out. Isn't the Golly lovely too. Thank you for sharing another delightful book. Have a wonderful weekend. Much love Catherine x0x0x
ReplyDeleteHello Catherine, how nice to hear from you. I must pop over for a catch up with your lovely blog.
DeleteI agree with you about the golly. I also like the one in the toyshop window. In fact, I like all the illustrations, which is why it’s my book of the week. It’s great being in charge! :-) Have a good weekend, love Barbara xxx
I LOVE YOUR BLOG.
ReplyDeleteChildren playing, being children, with their toys, their dog, their pets (that drawing with the three children on the horse, now that's my idea of a fun summer day) - all these sweet images are what once was for many of us. I then think about the many children these days who don't even go outside to discover themselves in nature, to imagine and transform an ordinary cardboard box into a machine, a car, a boat...children today - what do they do? Not these things, so much. But I will never grow up.
Thank you for your sweet world dear Barbara! LOVE, Anita
you mention. I sometimes think computers are a menace, but then I remember all the benefits (like getting to know lovely folks like you) and have to rethink. I do think there should be time for computers but even more time for playing outside, but then parents are afraid to let their children roam now. I guess we were the lucky ones.
DeleteThank you for your lovely comment dear friend. Enjoy the weekend. Barbara xx
I absolutely adore these illustrations, I always find the older ones have something a little more about them than some modern illustrations.
ReplyDeleteI love the little Golly peeking out of the box <3
I enjoy reading your book posts and always look forward to seeing what little gems you discover.
Have a wonderful weekend Barabra x
Hi Yvonne, they are gorgeous aren’t they? I can tell you like the same kinds of things as me, and I agree the older things are just a bit special.
DeleteI’m glad you are enjoying the posts.
Have a great weekend. Barbara. x
Lovely illustrations and the children are so smart.

Hello Sister, I’m not sure any of the children would be quite that clean after a few days on the farm, but make believe is always so much nicer than real life.
DeleteThanks for leaving a message. xx
How adorable. I've not seen these books before.

Morning Jean, Blackie published some lovely books back in the 20s & 30s. The ones illustrated by Cicely Mary Barker are really beautiful.
DeleteHave a great weekend, Barbara.
Chicks? Only one little girl and no chickens? Where are the chicks? Very cute story and I agree the pets look adorable in the cake shop.

DeleteHello Eve, chick just means a young child or in the case of this book – children. The term has rather gone out of fashion because it started to be used as a slightly offensive way to refer to young women.
Anyway, I agree with you, there should be more chickens in the story! ;-)
What's lovely about these illustrations is the detail - you can spot something different every time you look, whether it's what the cheeky little pup is up to, or what the children are wearing. I guess that in the days before moving pictures, be it film or TV, children's attention was on one picture for a much longer time. Lovely pictures, and I do think that today's youngsters still put their toys to bed in shoe boxes!
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, I’m sure you’re right about toys and shoe boxes, although my two little granddaughters seem to put lots of things in the doll's house! It makes me smile when I see photos of Barbie dolls crammed onto chairs that are far too small for them. Thanks for calling in, Barbara.
DeleteCute, cute book. Imagine taking a cat and a dog on vacation with you, but they all look pretty happy.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like a perfectly reasonable idea to me Donna, well the dog anyway, not so sure about the cat. Cats are rather more independent and would probably be most put out to be taken away from home. : )
DeleteHow adorable. I love the idea of the children travelling on their own. The dog and cat in the cake shop are precious. It was indeed a simpler time.
ReplyDeleteHi Darleen, I'm sure most people would think twice before letting such small children set off on their own. As you say life was much simpler then. I hope you are enjoying the weekend. Barbara.
DeleteIf only the world was perfect we all could have gone on holidays on our own as kids:) however this is an adorable book with very cute illustrations which any tiny tot would love to read.
ReplyDeleteHi Shashi, I couldn't agree more! I was given loads of freedom when I was little, but mum & dad would have drawn the line at my holidaying alone.
DeleteWhat adorable pics ... our cat sits at the table often even though she is not allowed. She loves to be naughty! M x
ReplyDeleteHi Marina, how lovely to hear from you. We don’t have any pets now, but when we did have dogs, they used to sit as close to the table as possible. They didn’t get on the chairs – but they would have liked to. Barbara xx
DeleteWhat an adorable book! Can't believe it was illustrated almost 100 years ago! The illustrations are adorable. I love the one with the animals in the cake shop too! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Hi Stephanie, the illustrations have survived those one hundred years brilliantly. Printers must have used good ink back then! Thanks for your visit. Barbara.
DeleteYes, I love that piece of all of them in a cake shop, too. And the one with the kids (and pets) waiting for the train. It's always good to read children's books where cats and dogs get along, and can even stand to sit on a stool together! I love the books you share, Barbara.
ReplyDeleteDear Barbara,I know am being slow but I am reading the posts of my all blogger friends at a pace which allows me to enjoy them as well as keep up with the 'real world' ...just as you so wisely said :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet little book ! And what delightful pictures! Yes even I liked the cat n dog sharing a stool showcasing their behinds :) For me, the second and third pics showing them packing and on station with the approaching steam engine were the most pleasing ... expressive and sweet illustrations... a cheery lot in true sense :)
Dear Kokila, I’m delighted you are enjoying the posts and please take all the time you need. I have been trying to visit you for the last two days but each time I almost get there something else crops up! I will post this reply and then be straight over.
DeleteThank you for your friendship Kokila, I really appreciate it. Barbara. x
The pleasure is all mine :)
