Final flight of the DJI Phantom 3

Keeping in touch with family is always important and never more so than when they live on the opposite side of the world. With that in mind our son in Adelaide made this video of him and his two little daughters in the park. Just so you know who is who Lilly is on the swing while Zoe is running around. You may be wondering why this is the final flight. If so there is a simple explanation. Just as Steve was finishing filming his drone, camera and all smashed to the ground! Some might say good job, but we would have to disagree. It was a sad day for Steve and for us, but it makes this film all the more precious.

    'welling' up not only the first time, of
    watching it...but, every time since!
    Have to confess, it certainly moved me, as
    l've said so many times before...Family are
    the most important thing in life..bar none!

    And! Hey! A drone and the camera can be replaced!

      Hi Willie, you are not wrong! I find myself watching it on ‘repeat’ and it certainly makes the family feel closer. We are looking forward to checking out that park next year. One of those swings has my name on it!

    Hi dear Barbra!

    I can feel that how sad you must have felt about this but let's be positive though it was a loss for you and Steve but thank God it was just a camera drone that fell.may God keep your family away from any kind of harm .I am sure your son will be able to recreate it soon my friend.
    His talent in filming is outstanding.
    Truly enjoyed his flight which for sure is not last

      It is a shame he couldn’t catch the actual crash on film, but I don’t suppose he would have wanted to watch it again.

      It’s beyond fixing I’m afraid, but it might be replaced when his funds allow.

      Technology really is wonderful but I sometimes think it’s moving too fast for me to keep up. Drones were something out of Science Fiction when I was growing up now they are a reality.

    What a lovely video. I'm impressed with how steady the filming was. I don't dare show it to my husband or he'll rush out and get a drone.

    The music was so sweet with the little girls. You'll watch this video for many years to come and it will be more precious each year!

    Oh, wow, what a great film! I love having a bird's eye view of an area of Australia I'm sure I'll never visit in real life; fun to see what the houses look like there, too. Steve did a great job filming and your granddaughters are as cute as ever. Thanks for sharing this little bit of their day with us. Sounds like drones should come with insurance of some sort. :(

      Hi Marcia, I’m surprised these things don’t come with insurance, or perhaps they do and Steve didn’t take it out. I must ask him next time we speak.
      I’m looking forward to trying out one of those swings next year and to take a walk around the park.

    Ah, such precious memories.

    I can remember the sorrow I felt when the cine camera along with the reels of images of my childhood could no longer be fixed. Of course technology means such things could now be transferred to DVD.

    Three Alternative Names for Drones....

    Unmanned Aerial System (UAS)
    Take an aircraft, add a radio connection or maybe a network and a human to control it using a remote. This is probably the phrase that is most commonly used by industry groups.

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

    This term became commonplace thanks to the Department of Defense who offers this drone definition as “powered aerial vehicles sustained in flight by aerodynamic lift over most of their flight path and guided without an on board crew…and can fly autonomously or piloted remotely.”

    This definition seems to be on the way out for non-military use.

    Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) or Vehicle (RPV)

    Military drones Predator or Global Hawk are often referred to as RPA. Typically used to be replacement vehicles to carry out search and rescue missions or missile strikes, without the human pilot present.

      Funds are a little low at the moment Sandra, but I expect he will replace it in due course. I must admit I didn’t know either, but it turns out anyone can buy one if they have a few hundred pounds to spare.

      Hello Claudine, I’m just like you and Lilly – if I see a swing I instantly want to get on it! We are planning a trip to Australia next year so not too long to wait. The girls will have changed a lot since we last saw them. We can’t wait to spend time with them and hear about all they’ve been doing. Would you believe Lilly starts school next year? I don’t know where the time is going.
