A little tree lived in a wood
As sad as he could be,
He wanted more than anything
To be a Christmas tree.
He dreamed of all the coloured lights,
the sparkling tinsel, too.
And all the joy that he could bring
to little folks like you .
One day some children came for him.
To take him home, and there
They dressed him in some pretty lights,
and shining Angel hair.
He made the children happy,
for they loved the way he shone --
This was the NICEST Christmas time
that they had ever known!
Now hope YOU have a lot of fun when you dress up your tree,
Sure hope it makes your CHRISTMAS TIME as happy as can be!
Vintage Christmas card from my collection published by Hallmark Cards in Great Britain.
Ha, I remember that story, I even read to my boys in the 80's
ReplyDeleteJulie xxxxx
I was wondering what sort of date it was and now I know thanks Julie. xxx
DeleteEarly sixties I think I remember seeing it at school
DeleteJulie xxxxx
It 'feels' like a 1960s card but I wasn't sure, thanks for the confirmation. x
DeleteHeHe! Thought l'd check at 8:30...as that's the
ReplyDeletetime you've been posting these posts! :).
Well done Watson..! :).
Goodness! What an awful story! :(.
Poor little tree, wishing to be a Christmas tree,
chopped down and put in a pot, horrid thing to do!
He should have been 'dug' up and replanted in a pot!
Then put back after Christmas, in the garden!
You wait..in a week or two, his needles will start
falling out...then off to the recycling plant! Bless!
Why can’t Christmas trees sew?
They always drop their needles.
What did the Christmas tree do
when the bank closed?
It started its own branch.
What type of tree fits in your hand?
A palm tree.
What do snowmen like to do on the weekend?
Chill out..!
That's it...I'm off...being picked up at eleven...!
Off to Poole..."Ding~Dong~Merrily~On~High...."

You can go to the top of the class young Willie! :-)
DeleteIt is a sad but at least the little tree was covered in glory for a short while, and he did get his wish.
Loving all the jokes and lucky you going to Poole. I’m off to Yeovil. Not quite the same is it?
Have fun. x
Simply ADORABLE. That poor little tree looked so forlorn until the children brought him into their lives. Seems it was a win-win for all. It's really touching, considering the symbolism and significance of the season.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and I think it's lovely but it is quite sad too when you think about it. x
DeleteThough I am not familiar with this story, the style of illustrations is definitely from my era of childhood and I LOVE THIS! I can say that I was greatly influenced by the books I read and thumbed and how I wanted to jump into the pages of this magical land. Now as an adult, my husband and I live in our childhood dreams and we are happy. Looking at this takes me back to the 60s, the magical era.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely Anita, the 60s really were a magical era and anything that takes us back there is just fine by me.
DeleteHave a wonderful weekend. x
Cute story and quite the elaborate Christmas card.
ReplyDeleteHi Alex, you are quite right it really is elaborate. I wish it was possible to buy cards like it now.
DeleteIt is gorgeous. I am glad the little tree got his wish - but sorry for the price he paid.
ReplyDeleteHe really did pay I high price. It would be nice to change the story just a little. Willie's suggestion of having him dug up and replanted after Christmas would have been kinder. Be careful of what you wish for seems to sum it up. x
DeleteThis is totally adorable and I love the vintage illustrations.
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased you like it Jeanie. x
DeleteGreat story & the illustration are beautiful. Thanks for sharing. BTW, not too hot at the moment.
ReplyDeleteThat’s good news! It’s pretty chilly here at the moment so it will be nice to have some warm weather to start with, the really hot stuff can come once we are acclimatised. :0)
DeleteWhat a cute story, the little tree's expressions before and after he reaches his goal are precious!
ReplyDeleteIt would be wonderful to be able to draw like that. Sadly, I’ve never been even a tiny bit talented in that department. Thanks for leaving another comment Marcia, I really appreciate it. I hope you are having a good weekend
DeleteI remember this story! I also remember thinking why did they have to chop down the tree? Why not decorate it in situ? Early evidence of my green tendencies? The illustrations are adorable. I remember having paper doll birthday cards from perhaps the same artist? Thank you, Barbara!
ReplyDeleteGreen tendencies to the fore I would say. We don’t have a real tree these days but when we did it was always a pot grown one. There must be lots of Christmas trees growing in the gardens of houses we once lived in!
DeleteI don’t ever remember having a paper doll birthday card, lots of paper doll books but never a card. I feel as if I’ve missed out now. :-) Thank you for visiting Colleen it really is kind of you. x
Aw, that is so sweet. Your advent calendar shares have been so warm and lovely. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend, Barbara.

Thank you Sandra and your comments are lovely too. xx
ReplyDeletePriceless!!! I love this so much! Big Hugs!
ReplyDeleteAww, thank you and big hugs to you too!
DeleteThis reminds me of something lovely I saw in our local woods. Someone had decorated a fir tree and there it was, standing in the middle of the forest in the snow.
ReplyDeleteMy twist on the story would be for the birds, squirrels and other woodland creatures to decorate the tree with natural decorations: nuts, cones, garlands of holly.
Hello Sue, I would love to see that tree. I wonder if they do it every year, and I wonder who they are. It makes me think of fairy tales and goblins!
DeleteYou might remember me writing about Nicole a friend in Holland? She had a wordless picture book published a couple of Christmases ago with a story very similar to your twist
http://marchhousebookscom.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/coming-soon-wonderful-wordless.html
Oh, gosh! Apologies to Nicole if she's reading this. I did see that post - I commented on it, too. I must have tucked the idea away in my head because it was so good. Anyway, I have enjoyed watching the YouTube video again - it's enchanting!
ReplyDeleteI'll have a look out for the little tree in the woods. As you say, there is definitely a story there, too.
Sue please don’t worry about that I do it all the time, and I know Nicole won’t mind a bit. I recently left a comment on a friend's blog and while there I told her about a book I was reading and loving. She replied by reminding me I bought the book after reading her review, and she knew that because I left a comment telling her so! Did I feel silly? You bet I did!
DeleteMaybe take a photo of the tree next time you see it – you might end up spinning a story around it.
